Mental Health: Why it is important for students?
Mental Health is often linked to an invisible backpack that we all carry. Sometimes, the bag feels light, but other times it feels unbearably heavy. But what we must keep in mind is that we are not alone in this journey, but, rather part of a larger community.
Mental health is a topic often kept in the shadows, but it is necessary for our overall well-being.
Mental health affects everyone, regardless of age, gender, caste, religion, or background.
According to research conducted by the National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI), it was found that every one in four students is affected by diagnosable mental illness.
The unrealistic expectations for academic performance, peer pressure, bullying, social status, the sense of inferiority that seeps in when we see others doing well-off than us.
The over-the-top expectations we have of ourselves, the responsibility we take upon ourselves to fulfill our own dreams, our parent's dreams, to give them the life they deserve. The dread of not being able to make it and being able to pay back even that 0.01% of what they have given up for us, eats us alive little by little pushing us into a void of self-loathing and self-destruction.
Mental health is important for students, it improves their overall well-being, helps them learn and become better individuals and learners. It helps combat stress, the stress of tests, exams, and forming and losing friendships. It promotes physical fitness, as physical activities help flush stress hormones. It improves academic performance as it is seen that children who prioritize mental health are better able to manage stress, anxiety, and depression.
Mental health awareness helps us cut through the feeling of loneliness we feel during this journey.
The key is to recognize that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but real strength.
In the end, I would just like to say that, this is just the beginning. There are more difficult things for us to face, let us not lose up and help each other get through it by just being there for each other.
"Emotional pain is not something that should be hidden away and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain, there is growth in your pain, but only if it’s first brought out into the open.” — Steven Aitchison
